This is where you really get to shine.)

Elinor is the daughter Mary and William Stewart, a union based on the success of their ancestors who held the same first names. She is the third child of six, which is fairly common in the British isles. William Stewart, loyal to his native city of Glasgow, had been heavily involved in the politics of Glasgow and was even, for some time, a member of the Scottish Parliament. He is a huge supporter of the Scottish National Party, which works to promote freedom from Britain for Scotland. Mary is a noted scholar, and she teaches at the University of Glasgow, though in the literature department. Her parents are religious Presbyterians, though Elinor expresses doubt upon the religion that her parents are so devoted to. She's studied other religions and has a keen sense in Buddhism, though she's shy about bringing this up because of her connection in Scottish politics.

Elinor grew up with knowledge and politics. Even her own name, her mother told her, is derived from literature. She chose Elinor as it was a derivative from the infamous Lenore from Edgar Allan Poe, who, though he was an American writer, she thought was brilliant. Elsa, her mother had explained, was chosen as it was a name deriving from Elizabeth, but she didn't want to do anything so ghastly as name her daughter after anyone English.

Growing up the middle child out of six, Elinor was often the forgotten girl. Her three older siblings all did rather well at school, some becoming lawyers or politicians after their father, others doing their own thing. Elinor was fascinated with history, however, and she excelled at history throughout most of her years in school. She also thoroughly enjoyed writing, though this was something she kept secret from her mother. As a girl, she attended a famous Gaelic-language school called Sgoil Gaidhlig Glaschu. She grew up with the language, as her father insisted it was important.

For her secondary school, however, her parents chose to send her out of Glasgow, knowing that the reputation of Glaswegian secondary schools was not the best. She attended one of the top secondary schools in Edinburgh, then went on to university. At university, she became a more avid writer. She recorded everything, keeping track of things in her personal journal, writing down everything that could help her improve. She had an affinity for historical fiction, and one of her favorite novels consisted of James Clancy's "Shogun" series.

At university, however, Elinor knew that it was difficult to be successful in a career just on writing alone. She chose a slightly more practical route from her mother and opted for a degree in law, though it's hardly her passion. Her father had always taught her the importance of being thrifty and of using every skill she had to make money. Elinor knew she had an opportunity at her hands. She could be like her father and venture into law, or like her mother with literature, or chose another path completely. As the middle child, she did go a bit unnoticed sometimes. So she chose her own path. She took a huge risk and ventured to America, wanting to explore the roots that gave her her name, among other things. In the midst of her travels, Elinor stumbled upon the money-making city of Las Vegas and fell in love with it. There were so many fascinating characters from all over the world that would give her plenty of ideas for writing a novel, something that had always been her dream.

So there she was, now. She interns at a local law firm, working on her novel and on occasion avidly writing fanfiction to take up her free time. She's a bit of a quirky girl who has a thirst for literature and history, but has her fair share of geeky indulgences, too. It was perhaps about two weeks after she arrived at Las Vegas that Elinor became aware of another voice in her head. It took her some time to place whose voice it was or what was happening, and at first she thought she was absolutely crazy. However, she realized after a few attempts at talking to him that it was none other than one of Tolkien's famous hobbits, Samwise Gamgee.

This thrills Elinor like none other. She's overly excited, but she'll try not to be so enthusiastic around him. She remembered the character from her own courses at university as well as when she'd read the books on her own. He was among her favorites, but she tries not to mention that too often to him.

Alter: (Give us a quick background of the Alter and their source in three paragraphs. How does the Alter feel about the situation? Are the character and Alter in conflict with each other? If your Alter does not have a canonical history, tell us what history you’ve created for them. Wow us with a deep understanding of the source and their world.)

Samwise Gamgee is the loyal best friend to Frodo Baggins. He's not exactly the most intelligent hobbit in the world, but he's brave where it counts and will do whatever he can in order to protect his friend. Sam grew up in the shire and never expected to ever have the chance to leave it. His own curiosity, however, was what allowed Samwise to actually go on the adventure with Frodo when he'd overheard Frodo's conversation with Gandalf after Bilbo's birthday party.

Rather innocent at first and trusting, Sam follows Frodo into the danger that awaits the two hobbits. He does mention that he's never set foot outside the shire before and that he was a bit scared to do so, but Frodo encourages him to continue. Sam's mostly very excited when he receives the opportunity to meet the elves at Rivendell, and he thinks that Lady Arwen is a very beautiful elf. She gives him the gift of a seeing glass that has a bit of magical power, to give him light when all other light was lost.

Sam protects Frodo in whatever way he knows how, though sometimes this often gets him into trouble with Frodo himself. When the creature Gollum is first taken "captive" by the pair on their way to Mordor, for example, it's Sam who notices Gollum's effects on Frodo. Frodo doesn't listen right away and even at one point demands that Sam return to the shire because he doesn't need his help anymore. Hurt and wounded by his best friend's words, Sam begrudgingly makes his way back to the shire, but he doesn't get too far until he discovers a very big secret that he thinks "Mr. Frodo" needs to hear. On his way back, he stumbles through Shelob's lair and rescues Frodo from Gollum's trap by using Arwen's magic light to chase the spider away.

The pair become closer after that, and Frodo does eventually allow Sam to help him carry the burden of the ring. As they get closer to their destination and Frodo nearly gives in to the power of the ring, Sam tries to convince his friend to let it go, so they can return home to the shire. In the end, it's Gollum's greed for the ring that allows Frodo to walk away from it, to throw the ring into Mount Doom (on Gollum's finger) and to return back to the shire with Sam and the others. There, Frodo finally manages to convince Sam to marry the hobbit whom he'd always had a crush on but had been far too modest and shy to even try to do anything about. Sam comes from the end of Return of the King, when the hobbits finally make it back to the shire and he has just asked Rosie to marry him after Frodo's urging.

To Sam, Elinor seems so far to be a lovely young girl, but he's often a bit shy to talk to her. It took him years to finally ask Rosie out, after all, and he does often get nervous around girls. He thinks she's smart and intelligent as well.

Journal/Key: Elinor's journal is a smartphone that she always carries on her, whereas Sam's is a book on old parchment. Elinor's key is shaped like a fountain pen, whereas Sam's is the glass light that Arwen had given him.

Storylines;

(Three storylines that can be filled by other characters in play. These can be open storylines for characters or for Alters. For example, your character can have a storyline for their biological sister or for their Alter’s spouse. Must be open upon character’s introduction into the game, not pre-filled!)

Open: Frodo Baggins. Sam would love to see his best friend and companion in game.
Open: Any of the Stewart children. Elinor would love to see any of her siblings in game. They are pretty much completely open for the taking. Elinor is the middle child at 29, and there are three older and two younger children.
Open: Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took. Sam would also love to see his fellow hobbits in game, please!

Writing Sample;

(Please give an example of at least two paragraphs. Introduce both character and Alter in one short piece. This is your chance to really show us how your character lives and breathes in the world, and how you have captured or interpreted the source Alter. Make us want to read more of what you’re writing! Existing players do not need to provide writing samples.)
